Students will be able to calculate the probability of a single or compound event. Students will be able to calculate the relative frequency of an event given experimental data. Students will be able to utilize the SMART Slate as well as the SMART Board to perform experiments and to examine and explore probability. ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS: Students will understand the difference between probability and relative frequency. DO NOW: Selected Questions taken from Spiral Review, Open Ended Test Prep and Logical Thinking ACTIVITIES: Do Now, Homework Review, Notes and Examples. What is an event, what is a compound event? Discuss how we calculate probability and how it is usually written as a fraction. Discuss how probability is most directly related in the real-world to the casinos. Discuss how casinos win. Compare and contrast relative frequency and probability. When are each used? Which one is a guess and which is based on an experiment? Students will calculate the probability of rolling the numbers 2-12 on a die, and observe that they are not all equally likely to happen. The will use their probabilities to predict what will happen when we roll the dice 100 times. Use the Gallery of Learning Tools in the Notebook software to roll a pair of virtual dice and collect data. Students can pass the SMART Slate around so that they can roll the virtual dice while remaining seated. The rest of the class will be able to view the rolling dice on the SMART Board.
